Uniper Secures Green Ammonia Deal With AM Green Strengthening Energy Transition

Germany-based energy giant Uniper has taken a significant step toward decarbonizing Europe’s energy system by securing a long-term green ammonia supply agreement with AM Green. The deal marks a major milestone in the global transition toward clean fuels and highlights the growing role of green ammonia as a viable alternative to fossil-based energy sources.

A Strategic Move Toward Clean Energy

The agreement positions Uniper as one of the early movers in adopting green ammonia at an industrial scale. Under the deal, AM Green will supply large volumes of green ammonia produced using renewable energy, primarily sourced from solar and wind power. The fuel will be exported to Europe, where it is expected to support decarbonization across power generation, heavy industry, and hydrogen-based applications.

For Uniper, the partnership aligns closely with its long-term strategy to move away from coal and natural gas while securing reliable, low-carbon energy supplies. Green ammonia is emerging as a key solution because it can be transported and stored more easily than hydrogen, making it practical for international energy trade.

Why Green Ammonia Matters

Green ammonia is produced by combining green hydrogen with nitrogen, using renewable electricity rather than fossil fuels. Unlike conventional ammonia, which is highly carbon-intensive, green ammonia offers near-zero emissions throughout its production process.

Uniper plans to use the imported green ammonia to support hydrogen infrastructure development and industrial decarbonization projects across Germany and other European markets. The fuel could play a central role in stabilizing renewable-heavy power grids by providing long-term energy storage and dispatchable power.

The long-term nature of the agreement provides certainty for both companies. AM Green gains a stable international buyer, enabling further investment in large-scale renewable projects. Uniper, in turn, secures access to clean fuel volumes needed to meet future regulatory and market demands.

From an environmental perspective, the deal is expected to reduce millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions over its lifetime compared to conventional fossil-based alternatives. Analysts see such agreements as essential to closing the gap between climate ambitions and real-world implementation.

The Uniper–AM Green agreement sends a strong signal to global energy markets that demand for green fuels is accelerating. As more utilities and industrial players commit to long-term clean energy contracts, costs are expected to fall, further accelerating adoption.
