Fairphone has announced their new move on the market with the successor to Fairbuds 2, due to be released on 14 October. The Dutch company, famous for its repairable and more sustainable electronics, will yet again build their new wireless earbuds on the same ground but with upcoming new features and makes to attract users other than normal music enthusiasts.
These things are part of everyday life now, but still you get components so tightly packed together, & a size so small, that if the battery fails or a component ceases to function, repairs can be a nightmare. Fairphone have been trying to up this challenge, with these openable, reparable, & hopefully longer-lived, audio products.
The next yet-to-be-released Fairbuds 2 will also maintain this ideology. HeadSets who revealed details of its release before launching, stated that the earbuds will contain seven fully replaceable modular components. Consumers will that means be able to replace individual parts rather than overhauling the entire product when a problem occurs, in line with HeadSets approach to tackling e-waste through 2010’s forward thinking designed products.
The wireless audio experience is undergoing another important enhancement with the addition of higher-quality codec support for the new Fairbuds 2. Fairbuds 2 will not only support the existing SBC and AAC Bluetooth audio codecs, but will also support Sony’s proprietary LDAC Bluetooth codec. This codec claims to provide higher quality wireless audio than more basic Bluetooth codecs.
In 2024, the original Fairbuds were released, with a comparable emphasis on repairability. The Fairphone implemented the use of interchangeable batteries in the tiny earbuds and charging case. They also designed various other parts as modular, and presented their solution as “a ready response to the throwaway culture of most small consumer electronic products”.
The pricing makes another interesting aspect of the Fairbuds 2 launch. The Fairphone will presumably be retailing the new headset at 119 in the European market, while the US retail price will be at $119. This is a lower price than the initial European launch price of the first-generation model, which was at 149 in 2024. There were price discounts applied on the first-generation model in the US market.
Fairbuds 2 may be interesting to consumers without regard to their specific audio characteristics (as shown by the silent out-of-ear comparisons)for the simple fact that the batteries, being in-ear, degrade over time and battery degradation is one of the justifications in changing otherwise-usable wireless budsand that the replaceable components focus on solving that issue and can prolong the product’s life.
The product launch comes just as repairability has grown in focus across the wider electronics industry. Repair advocates including iFixit have published support guides for wireless audio products, demonstrating how challenging repairs can be, for example, when batteries are glued in, or components are carefully glued down. Fairphone’s modular approach stands in stark contrast.
As the October 14 launch date creeps closer, Fairbuds 2 will be a great way to see if peoples will pay a premium for wireless features in exchange for the ability to repair the device. Fairphone is hopeful that sound quality, the ability to swap parts, and a longer lifetime will go hand-in-hand in a tiny set of everyday in-ear headphones.
